TUS Corona Virus Guide
The world is waiting for the next big pandemic. Ever since the Spanish Flu which killed an estimated 500 million people at the end of the first world war, the collective fear of epidemiologists across the globe is the emergence of a novel pathogen that will sweep the planet.
Is Your Martial Art Instructor Legit?
Sensei, guru, teacher, sifu, Instructor, professor, instructor, tuhon, and all the names that you can call a teacher. A teacher is one who dedicates their time to teach the student, to educate and ensure that their student learns from them. Logic would dictate that the most experienced would make the best teachers in their field – this, however, is not necessarily true. While an expert may have all the technical knowledge in their given crafts, they may not necessarily guarantee a great education for their students.
Emergency Prepping and Action
To be good at doing the right things, you have to continuously practice the right things right. Continuously working on your craft while looking for weak spots for you to work on and to improve. Equipping yourself with the right equipment is just as important as good preparation. The preparation and action will be broken down into three parts: Learn, Do, Carry.
Pencak Silat and The Future
In the age of advancing technologies, weapons industries, artificial intelligence, autonomous robots, is Pencak Silat training still as relevant and as lethal as it was? Can it still be counted on for self- protection? What are the odds of using silat and winning against killer robots or enhanced human beings? While everything is evolving rapidly, Pencak Silat MUST EVOLVE. Either the art evolves, or it dies, or you die.
Weapons of Silat
Until the early twentieth century, the people of the archipelago have forged weapons primarily for their daily use and self-defense rather than using it for offensive purposes. People mainly use these weapons as a tool for their daily chores and activities such as hunting, gathering firewood, care for their crops, and building their shelter. As the cultural and social systems developed, the functions of the weapons have also evolved and changed.
Proper Planning Prevents Total Failure
Special forces are taught to have backup plans. A plan that backs up another plan that backs up the backup plan. Simply put, 3 backup plans. When things go wrong, it's nice to have plans a, b, c, and as much as it takes until the problem is solved. It is crucial that the plan is well constructed and is rehearsed. During the fight is not the time to test your plan for the first time. As the saying goes, it wasn’t raining when Noah built the ark.
Killers in Kevlar
Firearms continue to be one of the most dangerous threats faced by both law enforcement and civilians. This observed increase in body armor wears by the law enforcement community. The trend, however, is also observed in civilians and criminals. You’d be wondering “Isn’t it hard to get body armor?”. Armor, like guns, is easy to get, and bad guys are catching on. Nobody knows how many crooks, lunatics, gangs, and militias have acquired body armor.
Best Places to Keep Emergency Cash
In the event of an emergency, there’s not much that you have control over. Two things that you can however control; yourself and the preparations you’ve made up to that moment. Where time is a luxury, you’d want to get out as fast and as safe as possible. Worst comes to worst, all that you’d ever safe is your life.
Levels of Situational Awareness
There’s this motto that says “Always be ready”, but let’s face it, and let’s be real, you can’t ALWAYS be ready. Being ready and prepared takes conscious effort and consumes mental energy, and if you think that you can ALWAYS be prepared and ALWAYS be ready, you’re fooling no one but yourself, and sooner or later you’re gonna get overwhelmed by trying to do so.
Fight, Flight or Freeze
The two most commonly heard response under stress is the Fight or Flight Response. I call these the “Oh, shit!” response. The fight or flight is also known as the acute type response, in which the body prepares itself to face the threat that is present by either fighting the threat or running away to safety. However, there’s another response which is known as the Freeze Response.
Situational Awareness Without Paranoia
Does one realize if there are people who have been following them down the block, or someone eyeing them from across the street, or two guys suspiciously patrolling on their motorcycle? That person could be you, going through your life, coming home from work, walking out of the mall or cinema, not realizing what is happening around, being unaware of the situation nor the environment.
Don’t Train to Fight...Train to Be The Last Man Standing
The real question that we should ask ourselves is not how often we train, but how effective? Are we really training to fight? Is it going to do us any good in a real-life violent situation where the consequences aren’t just losing points or losing matches but losing your life and your loved ones? Are we really preparing for that?
Everyone Has a Plan Until They Get Ambushed
But have you actually tried fighting from a position of disadvantage? Rarely does one train starting from the positions mentioned, but that's the reality. That's where reality hits and bitch slaps you right in the face, that's when you'll realize that there's no such thing as dueling in the street.
