The Mindset and Techniques That Saved My Life”

In the line of duty, police officers face numerous challenges and risks every day. One such danger comes in the form of violent dog encounters, where quick thinking, physical prowess, and a determined mindset can make all the difference between life and death. In this article, I share my harrowing experience with a large German Shepherd police dog and the invaluable lessons I learned during that life-altering event. Join me as we delve into the statistics of dog attacks and explore effective methods to protect oneself against such situations.

The Setup:

It was a tranquil Friday morning, the sun just beginning to rise as I was taking care of an aggressive German Shepherd police dog on my property. Living on a farm surrounded by livestock, it was essential to keep this powerful animal secure. I had installed a flexible electric fence to prevent the dog from venturing near the vulnerable sheep. Little did I know that this simple situation would soon turn into a fight for my life.

The Attack:

As fate would have it, the dog caught sight of the neighboring sheep and, driven by instinct, attempted to breach the fence. In a desperate effort to save the dog from the electric shocks, I rushed to his aid. However, the moment his paws hit the ground, he turned on me with a ferocity that sent shockwaves through my entire being. The dog's powerful jaws tore into my abdomen, chest, legs, and arms, leaving a trail of carnage in its wake. As I fought to stay on my feet, the dog's weight sent me sprawling to the ground, leaving me vulnerable to its vicious assault. With each bite, the threat to my life grew exponentially.

The Survival Mindset:

In the face of such a life-or-death struggle, my training and experience as a police officer played a crucial role. As the dog relentlessly attacked, time seemed to slow down, and I realized that maintaining a calm and determined mindset was paramount. The training I had received emphasized the importance of refusing to surrender mentally, no matter how dire the circumstances. Drawing on that training, I made the life-saving decision to fight back. Driving my forearm into the dog's mouth, I created the necessary distance to safeguard my neck and face from its deadly jaws. Despite the excruciating pain and the alarming injuries I had sustained, I knew that my survival depended on my unwavering determination to win.

The Final Stand:

Finally gaining some leverage, I managed to straddle the dog, giving me the precious moments I needed to access my firearm. With unwavering focus, I aimed and fired, ending the life-threatening encounter. Though it came at a high cost, the decisive action ultimately saved my life.

Lessons Learned:

Reflecting on this unforgettable experience, I came to appreciate the gravity of the statistics surrounding dog attacks. According to recent data, thousands of dog attacks occur each year, often resulting in severe injuries and, tragically, even fatalities. However, armed with knowledge and preparedness, one can significantly increase their chances of survival.

Protective Measures:

  1. Awareness and Preparedness: Recognizing the signs of aggression in dogs can be crucial in preventing an attack. Maintain a high level of situational awareness, particularly in unfamiliar environments or when dealing with unfamiliar dogs.

  2. Personal Protective Equipment: Utilize appropriate protective gear, such as bite-resistant clothing and gloves, when handling potentially aggressive dogs. This can provide an added layer of defense against bites and lacerations.

  3. Non-lethal Deterrents: Employ non-lethal deterrents, such as pepper spray or a stun baton, to deter an attacking dog when lethal force is not necessary. These tools can provide valuable seconds that could save your life.
